Summer is here. While some of us think the best day ever is spent sunning on the beach, others will shudder in horror at the mere thought and stick to staying indoors. Just like winter can cause skincare problems, the same can happen in the summer too. Oil production increases, blemishes appear more often, and then there is UV damage to worry about. How should we swap our skincare products to achieve healthy, glowing skin this summer?
Be diligent about sunscreen
Sunscreen is a must in any skincare routine year-round. It is the best antiaging product full stop. But you should be extra diligent about it in the summer. UV light causes damage to the skin and prematurely ages it. Then there is the not-so-small matter of skin cancer. Don’t use old sunscreen as it deteriorates over time and gives you a false sense of protection. Apply sunscreen liberally before going outdoors. You should reapply it every couple of hours and especially if you exercise or go swimming for example.
Gone are the days of goopy, thick sunscreens. If your skin is oily or combination, try a light emulsion. If your skin is dry, try a hydrating sun cream instead of a moisturiser. When it’s time to reapply, there are sprays, sticks, and powders you can use (even on top of makeup).
Lighter products and pared-down routine
If a mere thought of applying a thick cream makes you break out in a sweat, you know it’s time to switch to lighter products (even if you have dry skin). Lighter moisturisers with skin-replenishing ingredients like ceramides will keep your skin hydrated without feeling suffocating on the face.
Gel cleansers or low pH foaming cleansers will remove sweat, dirt, makeup, and sunscreen and leave your face feeling clean without drying it out. Likewise, opt for lighter hydrating layers like essences and face mists to prevent dehydration.
Another thing to consider is a pared-down routine. Cleanse your face, apply treatment serum, and then moisturiser. In the mornings, the last step would be sunscreen. Alternatively, use a moisturiser with an SPF if you can’t tolerate another additional step.
Since we are getting more sun exposure in the summer, don’t skip on an antioxidant serum. The gold standard is vitamin C (read here why it should be an essential part of your summer skincare routine). It protects the skin against free radical damage, boosts collagen production, and helps fade hyperpigmentation.
When it comes to retinol, it is okay to use it in the summer as long as you are diligent about daily sun protection.
We all sweat more, and most of us are more prone to breakouts and congestion during the summer months. It is okay to either incorporate a chemical exfoliant or continue using it. That is if you: a) don’t overdo it and b) don’t forget your sunscreen each day.
Don’t neglect your body either.

- Reapply your sunscreen if out and about.
- Use a light lotion to keep your moisture barrier healthy.
- If you get an ingrown hair or two, try not to pick at it or squeeze it. It can cause damage and leave behind a dark mark. You can treat with a chemical exfoliant, but make sure to moisturise afterwards.
